Edginess and anxiety had been Hannahâs constant companions ever since her talk with Adam. Was he right? she wondered. Was there something wrong with her independent nature?
No, she kept telling herself. Of course there wasnât.
Tammy and Brian were sitting at the kitchen table, talking. Hannah could see the young man through the front picture window from where she was prepping on the front porch. Now that Hannah knew about Tammyâs beau, her sister felt there was no need to hide her visits with Brian.
As much as she hadnât wanted to like her sisterâs boyfriend, Hannah had to admit that sheâd found Brian to be mannerly, if a little on the shy side. And he treated Tammy with a wondrous gentleness.
Hannah had spent the last half hour sweeping up paint chips off the porch floor and darting covert glances through the window at them. She was amazed by the deep feelings that had evolved in her for Tammy.
Sheâd come to Little Haven to do what she could for a sister she didnât know, and now she was experiencing some new and complicated emotions that could almost be described as maternal.
Her wristwatch told her she still had an hour to wait for Adamâs arrival. She just fumed to think about his free-and-easy attitude toward work. The man seemed to be as ambitious as a slug. How did he ever think to get ahead in life?
The question was like sandpaper against tender skin, and her irritation flared.
She was irritated at Adam for putting off the job of painting the house, and irritated at herself for being attracted to such a...a lazybones.
âIâve waited long enough,â she murmured to the still summer day. She wasnât even sure heâd show up at noon like heâd promised.
Thatâs when she went around back to the shed. She dragged out the rickety old ladder sheâd used to scrape the paint from the porch. And then she gathered the paint, the brushes and rollers sheâd bought in town. She wouldnât wait for Adam, sheâd tackle this job herself.
Instinct told her to start at the top and work down, so she positioned the ladder at one corner and climbed up to paint the porch ceiling. Two dribbles of white pigment ran down her arm, a fat drip plopped on her jaw, before she realized she was filling her brush too full. She swiped at the paint, smearing it across her skin. Sheâd clean up later.
Every ten minutes or so sheâd come down from the ladder and take a quick peek through the window to see that Brian was still seated at the kitchen table. She probably shouldnât worry so much over Tammy and Brian being friends, but she just couldnât shake the nebulous anxiety that gnawed at her.
Theyâre in love, Adam had told Hannah.
Well, something could happen to break them up, Hannah fretted as she climbed the ladder. Tammy could get her heart broken, and Hannah didnât know if her delicate sister could handle such pain and rejection. On the other hand, their relationship might blossom into something deeper, something more.
